The Fast Way to a Fruitful 2020!

“Dieting changes the way you look. Fasting changes the way you see.” – Lisa Bevere

The holidays are a time of celebration, a time of feasting! When Jesus was approached by critics who wondered why his followers didn’t fast, but enjoyed all the foods, His response was “there no need to fast when the one you are celebrating is with you!” (Christine’s paraphrase) So we feast at Christmas, rightly so, for we celebrate a God who came to be with us!

YET, As the new year sets in, and the holiday celebrations come to a close, the time comes to get clear on our intentions for the future. We don’t just “get” to where we want to be- we need to be intentional and set our sights on the goal. If you don’t know where you’re aiming you’ll miss the mark!

Many Christ followers set out in January to fast for the year ahead. It’s a way to see the Lord and gain clarity for His will, to hear His voice more. The discipline of fasting helps us to know that He is, actually, really, truly, all we need.

There are so many references in the Word about fasting! And exploring the Scriptures it’s clear to see that fasting is effective, it’s a way to petition the Lord with action!

Some of my favorite references are in Acts when Paul and Barnabus spend time praying and fasting as they choose leaders for the churches they start. Another great example is Esther asking her people to fast and pray as she petitions the king on their behalf. And then of course the time Daniel fasted and prayed and as a result- received a visit from an angel!

As Christ followers, our aim should always be the will of Jesus. And as the church, there are some general things that we should always be aiming for! Living righteously, being responsible, sharing the gospel, advancing the kingdom. But we we’re all made so differently, in order to participate in this eternal design of God in a unique way. So, gaining clarity on what particular thing (s) the Lord would call us to in the coming year is a fantastic reason to fast in January.

Petitioning for our family, our nation, the church as a whole and the salvation of the world is another great reason to commit to fasting. Somehow, in the midst of a fast, our prayers have a bit more power within the Spiritual realm. For example, in Mark 9:29, Jesus states the reason a certain demon would not be cast out for the disciples. He said “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (New King James Version)

There is a wrong way to fast

Now, as we contemplate whether to fast or not, we have to consider that there are many wrong ways to fast. God calls us to have pure motives in order for our fasts to be effective. Isaiah 58:3-8 lays out the kind of fasting the Lord prefers.

‘Why have we fasted,’ they say,  ‘and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves,  and you have not noticed?’

Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

My January 2020 Fast

This January I’m committing to doing a Metabolism Reset/ Liver cleanse. Yes, it’s a specific diet. And while I am praying that it will equip my body to be stronger in 2020, I’m going to be asking God to change the way I see. Not the way I look.

I truly believe that the health of our body is directly linked to the health of our Spirit and soul! When our body functions well, we see well! When we have a well functioning gut & thyroid, balanced hormones, level serotonin & cortisol levels equaling less anxiety, depression, fatigue, and brain fog, we are so much more equipped to discern God’s will! You can hear all about that in my this episode of the Unpacked podacast:

Is fasting something that you do routinely? What drives you to do so? Would you like to join me on my fast? Message me if you’re interested!

Here are some links that you might find helpful! If you’re interested in joining me in the Reset you’ll need to do some prep! Get all those veggies and have that pea protein on hand! I can share with you all the info you need, or you can get the book in order to have that resource in front of you.

Order the Metabolism Reset Book:

To do the Reset you can order Dr. C’s protein shake or make your own. There are recipe’s in the book, or I’m happy to share some with you! It can be much more affordable to make your own, but it’s not quite as tasty… I’m including a link to his shake on amazon! Some people have mentioned they like the one from Dr. C’s site more (so that link is below as well!).

Get it from Dr. C’s site here:

Here’s a fantastic little piece from Lisa Bevere on dieting vs. fasting:

More info coming your way!

Early next week I’ll post more about the prep I’m doing for the month of January!
