This morning I read a quote from The Living Bible that paraphrases Proverbs 14:14 as “The backslider gets bored with himself; the godly man’s life is exciting.” This made me chuckle a bit.
Although my life can be very repetitive and feel mundane at times…to step back and examine where I’m at (and have been) it’s obvious that my life is anything but boring!
I remember back in the day, a single woman with little responsibilities, so passionate about this adventure of life. Oh, I still am the same woman, but my perspective has changed a bit! Life was SO exciting as I constantly wondered what God was going to do with me, what ministries and conversations, jobs or “races” he would have me start today, tomorrow, in five years… I’m much more grounded now, and focused of course, because, I don’t have to look very far to see what’s next.
My adventure now is sitting (ok maybe running) right in front of me. These little souls are ripening right now. Talk about producing fruit; here are some evident fruit, still attached and soaking up whatever comes to them from my branch. My branch had better be attached to that holy vine! ( “I am the true vine; you are the branches.” Jn 15:5) And my passion for this “exciting” race God’s got me on should be on fire.
Just like back in the day when I was that wide-eyed girl ready to walk of a cliff for my God. “Everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” (Heb 12:1) can become so mind consuming. That is why we are called to throw it off. Practically speaking that means to overlook that comment my husband made and trust in his good intentions (even if he was rude it will just hinder my run to dwell on it), I need to let my boys be loud obnoxious boys and address only those things that will hinder them in their race, I need to not focus on the cleanliness of my kitchen, but my families meal, their need for a hug or a pep talk, for their mom/wife to stop and listen to them… These are the things that will help me reach the end of the race and hear “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” (Matt. 25:21)
Right now my calling is clear. Although at times I miss that girl who was so excited and passionate about the mysterious plan God had for her, I rest in the knowledge that my calling right now is clear. And it is definitely not boring! Although trouble comes by the bushel it is still quite fun to see His hand so evidently working it all out. And how his blessings far outnumber the bussels of trouble!
